Wegovy is a once-a-week injection that is clinically proven to aid weight loss. The pre-filled injection pens are manufactured by Novo Nordisk – the same manufacturer of other weight loss injections including Saxenda and Ozempic.
Wegovy is licensed for people with a BMI greater than 35kg/m² and with at least 1 weight-related condition. In exceptional cases, it may be given to people with a BMI between 30kg/m² and 34.9kg/m².
In England, obesity affects 1 in 4 adults. Obesity is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular illness, such as heart attacks and stroke, diabetes, and some cancers. The NHS spends billions of pounds a year treating conditions related to obesity.

How Does Wegovy Work?
Wegovy’s active ingredient – semaglutide – is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) analogue.
It increases the production of insulin – a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Semaglutide also delays your stomach from emptying, leaving you feeling fuller for longer and suppressing your appetite.
Semaglutide can also prevent cardiovascular events, such as heart disease and stroke, in people with type-2 diabetes.
Wegovy must be taken alongside a healthy, low calorie diet and regular exercise.
How much weight can I lose on Wegovy?
According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), adults taking Wegovy lost 12% of their bodyweight on average.
How long does Wegovy take to work?
It’s difficult to determine how long Wegovy will take to work for you. This is simply due to everyone’s body being different and responding to medicines differently.
How Do I Use Wegovy?
Wegovy is a self-administered sub-cutaneous injection. The pens contain a small concealed needle that injects the medicine just below the skin.
Each Wegovy pen contains a single dose of semaglutide and a needle, so you don’t need to worry about fixing needles to the pen or dialling in the correct dosage. Simply remove the cap and press the pen against your skin to administer the injection.
Once you use the pen to deliver your weekly dose, you discard the whole pen away. The needle will be covered once the injection has been administered, so that you don’t accidentally prick yourself.
Before you use Wegovy, check the solution inside the pen to ensure that it is clear and colourless. There is a small window in the side of the pen through which you can inspect the solution.
If the solution is cloudy, discoloured or contains particulates, do not use the pen. Dispose of the pen safely in a sharps bin and use a new pen.
You can administer Wegovy at any time of day, but you should aim to take it on the same day every week.
Wegovy can be taken with or without food.
You can inject Wegovy in your abdomen, thigh or upper arm. You should change the injection site each week.
Wegovy pens should be disposed of in a designated sharps bin. Always keep sharps bins out of sight and reach from children and pets. Never dispose Wegovy pens via household waste.
How do I store Wegovy?
Store Wegovy in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C. Keep the pens away from the freezer compartment. Never store the pens without the caps.
Wegovy pens can be stored between 7°C and 30°C for up to 28 days.
Always store Wegovy pens out of sight and reach from children and pets.
Why are Wegovy pens different colours?
Each dosage is given its own unique coloured pen – green, pink, brown, blue and black.
With each pen colour, you use it for 4 weeks before increasing your dose with the next pen.
Throughout your course of treatment with Wegovy, your dosage increases until you reach the maintenance dose of 2.4mg per week.
Once you reach the maintenance dose of 2.4mg, you continue taking the dosage weekly until your ideal weight is achieved.
What should I do if I forget to take Wegovy when I should?
If you forget to take Wegovy, and your next dose is due in 2 days or more, use Wegovy as soon as possible. If it is less than 2 days until your next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with your usual dosage.
What should I do if I accidentally use 2 Wegovy pens in one week?
Taking more Wegovy than you should can cause serious side effects such as severe nausea, vomiting and very low blood sugar. If you accidentally take more Wegovy than you should, go straight to your nearest accident and emergency department. Remember to take the packaging and any remaining medicine with you.

Is Wegovy better than Saxenda?
In a randomized clinical trial, people taking Wegovy lost more weight on average (-15.8%) than those taking Saxenda, who lost on average -6.4% of their bodyweight over the course of 68 weeks. However, the researchers did conclude that other factors, such as tolerance and sensitivity to each weight loss medication, should be considered.
What’s the difference between Saxenda and Wegovy?
While both Saxenda and Wegovy are injections that aid weight loss, there are some key differences.
Firstly, Wegovy contains a different ingredient than Saxenda. While Saxenda contains liraglutide, Wegovy contains semaglutide. Both ingredients belong to the same group of drugs that increase the production of insulin in the body and suppress appetite.
Unlike Saxenda, which requires to be injected daily to be effective, Wegovy is only injected once a week. This makes it more convenient and less hassle for most people.
Finally, Wegovy pens do not require you to fix a needle to the pen. Each Wegovy pen comes with a needle build in. All you need to do is remove the cap and press it against your skin for it to actuate the needle.
Can I travel with Wegovy?
You can travel with Wegovy. Take your Wegovy in your carry-on luggage. Do not leave it in your regular luggage, as it may freeze if left in the cargo hold of the aircraft. Store Wegovy in the original packaging.
